Get to know David Adams, founder and president of Adams Wealth Partners.
Nashville Lifestyles: How long have you lived in Nashville? What is your favorite neighborhood?
David Adams: I have lived in Tennessee my entire life, but specifically Nashville for twenty years. I love the 12 South neighborhood because it has some of the best options for dining and shopping in the city. After renovating three historic homes in the area, I bought my office on the main strip and did a total design renovation and interior design transformation. Now, it’s the location of our practice’s main headquarters.
NL: How has Nashville influenced your life and career?
DA: Little did I know when I left Memphis in 2004 to come to Nashville and start my practice, that I would witness such an amazing small town grow into a major city. The energy, people moving here daily, cultural growth, real estate projects, and business network have blessed my life and career more than I can express. Most importantly, the friends I have made in the process are worth more than any business opportunity.
NL: What drew you to becoming a financial advisor?
DA: I was the weird kid who at sixteen-years-old knew this was what I wanted to do, and I saved up money since age twelve from my yard cutting business to buy my first stocks. I loved managing money and the peace that came from being able to buy things with cash, as well as save up money for things I wanted in the near future. Plus, I was born talking and I am an extrovert, so dealing with and helping people is in my DNA.
NL: When did you open Adams Wealth Partners? What would you say is your specialty?
DA: I opened Adams Wealth Partners back in 2004. This year marks our twentieth anniversary. Our speciality is having an amazing team who focused on white glove service and treating every single client like family. That’s not just lip service or marketing, that’s what I would hope every single client you ask would say is what makes us different from all the other financial advisors in town. Our unique niches that have become our specialities are songwriters and musicians, entrepreneurs, divorcees, and corporate I executives.
NL: You wrote a book. What was your inspiration behind writing the book?
DA: For ten years I had been writing this book in my head, through hundreds of real life experiences with actual clients, coupled with my father’s very personal story. I realized that I wanted to write a book sharing my heart, expertise, and actual client examples with a group of people larger than I could possibly serve day-to-day in our boutique practice. So, the book was my way to spread the word and wisdom I had gained in my field, in hopes of inspiring readers that may not have access to this type of advice. And what a blessing this book has been, with the connections I have made and the people who have shared how much it helped them!
NL: Can you share some of those principles?
DA: The overarching principle is that too many people have worked their entire lives, saving money, like a hamster on a wheel, hoping to retire in their mid 60s, and finally enjoy life and travel the world… only to sometimes find out that their health won’t allow it or they don’t have any hobbies or close friends to enjoy these years with. This antiquated view of retirement is broken and needs to be eliminated from our planning, and instead, people need to find ways to Retire While You Work® (our federally registered philosophy) while enjoying life in different stages throughout each decade of life. Instead, the goal is to change a person’s career into a passion project as early as they can, allowing them to work longer because it keeps them engaged, connected, and healthy, without needing as much money saved in the bank. I’ve seen so many people breaking the old mold that our industry taught about retirement and the stories are amazing and so freeing.
NL: What are your hobbies?
DA: Anyone who knows me knows that I am a 50 percent left-brained numbers kind of guy and a 50 percent right-brained creative and design guy. I’ve renovated our main office, three award-winning historic homes, two mid-century modern homes, and I am working on two new modern builds. I really love interior design and decorating, and have been involved in the process while learning so much in each of my projects. I also love to spend time with my seven-year-old Yellow Lab, Jolene, who is our office’s therapy dog (director of stress management is her formal business title). Plus, I enjoy traveling the world, playing tennis and pickle ball, wake surfing, yoga, working out, and of course, Retiring While I Work.®
NL: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given, professionally or personally?
DA: People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Basically, care about people, love on them, and keep your ego in check. Humbly confident, always.
NL: Are there any charities you support?
DA: I’ve served on various boards over the years and helped multiple non-profits, but the two passion projects I spend most of my time on these days are beyond rewarding. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is something my practice has sponsored the last few years and we’ve been the number one fundraising team two years in a row. My mother died last year of this cruel disease and I’m determined to help others emotionally through this process and by raising money to help find new treatments and a cure. The other non-profit is Ancora TN, which fights against human trafficking in Middle Tennessee. I serve as the chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, and we are working to build out our Survivor Restoration Campus after receiving a large grant from Tennessee a couple years ago. Both of these mean so much to me, and the clients and friends who have joined me in helping has warmed my heart beyond words.
NL: What do you do in your spare time?
DA: I’m sorry, I am having a hard time understanding what spare time is, those words aren’t computing? All joking aside, I work hard to map out recharge days of self care every month, and travel weeks each quarter in order to stay aligned with my Retire While You Work® principles. My team does an amazing job of holding me accountable to these goals and they know that a David that is full of travel and adventure is a happy one.
NL: What is your favorite restaurant to dine at in Nashville right now?
DA: There are so many amazing restaraunts in Nashville these days, I can’t keep up! If you go to Epice for lunch any day of the week, there is a 75 percent chance you will see me there. I also enjoy having a meeting or two a week at Soho House.

The 2024 Forbes ranking of America’s Top Wealth Management Teams Best-In-State, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. This ranking is based upon the period from 3/31/2022 to 3/31/2023 and was released on 01/09/2024. Advisor teams that are considered must have one advisor with a minimum of seven years of experience, have been in existence as a team for at least one year, have at least 5 team members, and have been nominated by their firm. The algorithm weights factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. Out of approximately 10,100 team nominations, 4,100 advisor teams received the award based on thresholds. This ranking is not indicative of an advisor's future performance, is not an endorsement, and may not be representative of individual clients' experience.
